Why The New Yorker fails miserably at satire.

It’s very simple.  When you attempt satire, you start with the truth and present it in a manner that is powerful, gut-level, even shocking.  So, where did The New Yorker go so terribly wrong?  First they started with a fantasy – that the only reason people wouldn’t vote for Obama is because they’re racist or intellectually challenged.  It’s a common self-aggrandizement amongst Obama Supporters to assume they are somehow uniquely non-racist and intelligent; and many of them genuinely believe it.  In fact, some of these Obama Supporters, sporting this delusion, went so far as to attempt to satirize their imaginary opponents – the make believe hyper racist redneck that is too dumb to tie his own shoe yet somehow manages to access the internet and read emails about how Obama is a Muslim.

Satire fails when its intended target doesn’t exist.

But the failure doesn’t stop there.  Oh no, it gets much worse.  As it turns out, most Obama Supporters are really, really, really dumb and aren’t going to understand even the most base attempts at satire.  That is precisely what happened.  Countless Obama Supporters went up in arms immediately, screaming bloody murder at the cover.  The staff at The New Yorker, being under the delusion that Obama Supporters are uniquely intelligent, found out just how intelligent they really are.

A small group of O’Lattes have tried, unsuccessfully, to come to grips with what just happened.  Their logic goes something like this, “Well, it was a great satire, but Americans are so stupid that it’ll just confirm their misinformed opinions of Obama.”  You will see this opinion in virtually any O’Latte blog you read on the subject.  They are of course, just following the lead of their deity who said that the cover, “...probably fueled misconceptions about me.

Americans are a lot smarter than that.  We that oppose Obama, do so for many, many different reasons.  I know that my reasons for opposing him are different than some of my liberal friends, some of my conservative friends, some of my moderate friends, etc.  To caricature us all as evil rednecks and themselves as supremely intelligent is horrendously ignorant.  But then, I’ve come to expect such masturbatory behavior from those that worship the great self-worshipper.

Special Note:  I realize that I make generalizations about Obama Supporters.  I wouldn’t do this if I encountered a variety of opinions and behavior amongst them.  I have, to date, encountered exactly two Obama supporters which managed to generate an original response – they weren’t just repeating Obama campaign/far left talking points.  These two are set on one side of a ratio against many thousands of Obama Supporters I have encountered that follow a pattern of disturbing predictability.  The incredible lopsidedness of this ratio is what causes my caricatures – they are based on direct experience, some of it even archived on this blog.

This article is wrong headed at it’s very core. Satire is a mechanism used to dispel myths and “perceived truths” in a ridiculous and hopefully humourous way. Satire does not require actual truth. To say the target does not exist is just plain silly when a good portion of the “smart” americans the author lauds, DO believe that Obama is a muslim and that that WAS a terrorist fist-bump! The left has lost it’s sense of humour and the right never had one. America does not “get” satire or irony and we are left with the most paltry of candidates.

The only reason that this Mr. & Mrs. Obama satire DOES have impact — and may very likely spread — is because like all good satire, or good humor for that matter, there’s more than a germ of truth in it. Otherwise, the satire would utterly roll off the Obamoids’ backs, having no impact.

Hey kids, it’s time for some rudimentary logic! According to the above poster, satire serves to dispel falsehoods (myths). But gosh, in order to recognize something as false, wouldn’t one first need to know what is true? Gee willickers! And even if one does not know the objective truth on a given subject, to make a claim of a falsehood is a claim of knowledge of truth of said falsehood’s factual accuracy – hence also derived from a truth. The New Yorker fails at satire, and “gormenghast4” fails miserably at logic.

I find it strange that Obama supporters would so up in arms that a small percentage of the population is confused over Obama’s religion. After all, Obama hasn’t exactly given just one straight answer on the subject – and even the answers he has given often create conflicts with facts and other accounts of his childhood.

First, the Obama campaign answered questions about his Muslim upbringing by saying, “To be clear, Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ in Chicago.”

Then, when a torrent of facts about Obama having actually been raised as a Muslim appeared, the campaign changed its tune and respun things as Obama having never been “that into it”. Incidentally, this claim was countered by the claims of many of Obama’s former teachers and classmates:

Personally, I don’t think Obama is currently a Muslism nor has been for a long time. I also don’t believe it really matters what Obama believes in, just so long as he’s HONEST about it. After being lied to, it’s no surprise to me that a small percentage of the population has been confused by Obama’s conflicting messages.

What is ridiculous, is that people like you get so up in arms over people being confused by Obama’s doubletalk. “OMG DON’T THEY KNOW THAT OBAMA WAS ONLY LYING THE FIRST TIME!?”

By the way, you really need to learn some logic. Your attempt was more pathetic than usual. Maybe if you put down the video games, you could check out a local library – I’m sure they have some in Oklahoma City.

And another thing, if you hate America so much, why did you come here? I was just in Germany last month and I can’t tell you how much I missed home. People believe in deodorant here.
