Why The New Yorker fails miserably at satire.
It’s very simple. When you attempt satire, you start with the truth and present it in a manner that is powerful, gut-level, even shocking. So, where did The New Yorker go so terribly wrong? First they started with a fantasy – that the only reason people wouldn’t vote for Obama is because they’re racist or intellectually challenged. It’s a common self-aggrandizement amongst Obama Supporters to assume they are somehow uniquely non-racist and intelligent; and many of them genuinely believe it. In fact, some of these Obama Supporters, sporting this delusion, went so far as to attempt to satirize their imaginary opponents – the make believe hyper racist redneck that is too dumb to tie his own shoe yet somehow manages to access the internet and read emails about how Obama is a Muslim.
Satire fails when its intended target doesn’t exist.
But the failure doesn’t stop there. Oh no, it gets much worse. As it turns out, most Obama Supporters are really, really, really dumb and aren’t going to understand even the most base attempts at satire. That is precisely what happened. Countless Obama Supporters went up in arms immediately, screaming bloody murder at the cover. The staff at The New Yorker, being under the delusion that Obama Supporters are uniquely intelligent, found out just how intelligent they really are.
A small group of O’Lattes have tried, unsuccessfully, to come to grips with what just happened. Their logic goes something like this, “Well, it was a great satire, but Americans are so stupid that it’ll just confirm their misinformed opinions of Obama.” You will see this opinion in virtually any O’Latte blog you read on the subject. They are of course, just following the lead of their deity who said that the cover, “...probably fueled misconceptions about me.”
Americans are a lot smarter than that. We that oppose Obama, do so for many, many different reasons. I know that my reasons for opposing him are different than some of my liberal friends, some of my conservative friends, some of my moderate friends, etc. To caricature us all as evil rednecks and themselves as supremely intelligent is horrendously ignorant. But then, I’ve come to expect such masturbatory behavior from those that worship the great self-worshipper.
Special Note: I realize that I make generalizations about Obama Supporters. I wouldn’t do this if I encountered a variety of opinions and behavior amongst them. I have, to date, encountered exactly two Obama supporters which managed to generate an original response – they weren’t just repeating Obama campaign/far left talking points. These two are set on one side of a ratio against many thousands of Obama Supporters I have encountered that follow a pattern of disturbing predictability. The incredible lopsidedness of this ratio is what causes my caricatures – they are based on direct experience, some of it even archived on this blog.
